Adil Baguirov is a board member in Dayton school but has relieved his position for new and better opportunities. Well after all, his past works have made significant contributions to how our education system is now and to how it is affecting students.
Adil Baguirov Dayton has been telling that education is not finite and it doesn’t begin when the morning bell at school rung and ends at dismissal more so, it doesn’t start on your first day as a kindergarten and finishes on your graduation, it is more of an ongoing process.
What really saddens Adil Baguirov is that, our current education system followed in different parts of the world is more focused on passing the tests, achieving goals and getting the right answers. There are numerous foundational blocks being missed which is critical in developing lifelong learning. These are not new ideas actually rather, these are backed by various studies and researches.
Number 1. Learning should be relevant – if we can learn new skills because we need it to do something important for us, then it will be easier to remember it. For instance, students who are studying how to measure and calculate the area of a land to which they’ll grow a garden will probably need a formula in calculating the area. They will surely get the formula in one way or the other, which will improve broaden their learning and improve their skills.
Number 2. Extrinsic rewards – extrinsic rewards given for activities that people enjoy can cause the decrease of their motivation, which is believed by Adil Baguirov as well. In other words, if your children love reading and they start receiving stars or stickers for reading 30 minutes a day, it is likely that they’ll lose interest and have less pleasure from reading sooner or later.
As a matter of fact, Adil Baguirov Dayton believe that such rewards has to be saved from the time that it is needed in motivating people to do things that they don’t want. With this in mind, the learning that comes with grades only becomes just learning for the sake of grades and not for added knowledge. Fact is, there are thousands upon thousands of newly graduated students even those with honors who are having a hard time recalling the content of what they learnt.
Number 3. Group study – collaborative learning environments actually encourages students to listen to others, think for themselves and explain what they think. The moment they leave school, it is vital for students to collaborate to each. Yet, our current education system is insisting to test them one by one and encourages to compete than to collaborate, which is what Adil Baguirov Dayton try to rule out.
